Takeaways from 'Intellectual Property Rights for Entrepreneurs' Workshop.

You’ve got the next big idea for a revolutionary app. You’ve written an epic novel. You wonder whether your logo is sufficiently different from Google’s. So how do you protect yourself?

Last week, the Pace University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) teamed up with the City Bar Justice Center to host a presentation about the various forms of intellectual property rights. Tom Makin, a lawyer at Shearman & Sterling, spoke about the intricacies of trademarks, copyrights, patents and trade secrets. He emphasized the benefits, challenges and costs of each, as well as how small businesses can better protect themselves from infringing on the rights of others and being vulnerable to litigation. The engaging presentation also built in a great deal of Q&A from the attendees, a mixture of existing business owners and startups from varying industries, that focused in on how the intellectual property laws relate to their own respective businesses.

Whether you’re the owner of a successful business operation or are looking to launch your startup, the Pace SBDC’s in-depth and confidential one-on-one business advisement, training and research help you achieve your business goals and dreams.
